November 7, 2009 Concert with David Crohan

We think Katie gave her best performance yet, in concert with MV's own pianoman David Crohan, at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown on MV, on Nov 7, 2009, to benefit the MVRHS Minnesingers' Spring 2010 tour to Prague.

David played a wonderful set of piano medley's from the 60's and 70's, very nostalgic!  Katie sang 9 songs - primarily Broadway favorites - with fabulous accompaniment by David, for a packed, standing room only audience of locals, who gave the pair a lengthy standing ovation.

A tidy sum was raised for the Minnesingers and all had a wonderful ...<< MORE >>

August Concert

Katie and David Crohan outdid themselves at their second concert together this summer. This time a benefit for COMSOG, at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard, on August 9, 2009. David did a mesmerizing set of Chopin Ballades interleaved with well known songs from the musical South Pacific. Then Katie joined him and they did 9 songs together. 4 of these were songs she sang in her July concert with him, and those songs are on her web site and Youtube from the July recording. 5 were new ones, and these are now on Youtube and available ...<< MORE >>

Then Aug 9 is her second concert with David Crohan, at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown, 4:30 pm. Details on the web site.

Recent Performances

Recent school performances included her High School choral group The Minnesingers, in their annual Spring Show, which includes dancing and popular music as well as traditional choral music. She did a lovely solo dance - something she has not done in several years. The show was great.

Last night, she participated in the High School's "Evening of the Arts", in which kids put on acts including musical and dramatic performances, as well as display works of  art. Katie participated in 4 musical performances - a solo, a duet, a trio and a group number. Her solo was one of ...<< MORE >>

Radio Ad

Katie had her first official paid gig this season!  The MV Savings Bank, a completely local bank, hired her to record a holiday ad for the radio. Charlie Esposito produced the recording, which has Katie singing Auld Lang Syne with 3 part harmony with herself, ending with a simple and tasteful holiday greeting from the bank. The ad has been playing on mvy radio, 97.2 FM, our local radio station. I have posted the recording on the Past Performances page.

Children's Hospital

Keith Lockhart and the brass section of the Boston Pops invited Katie to join them at a holiday concert for the patients and their families at Children's Hospital on the morning of December 15th. She sang Winter Wonderland, and also helped lead a sing along of carols. Then she went room to room with a trumpet player to chat with and sing for patients.

The night before, the Pops graciously gave us tickets to the annual Holiday Concert at Symphony Hall, which was absolutely fabulous, complete with a slide show of The Polar Express narrated and accompanied live ...<< MORE >>

Another honor!

We just learned that Katie has been voted into her high school "Peer Outreach" program. She is one of only 5% of the students in her school selected for this honor, based on getting the highest numbers of votes from the entire student body. Students were asked to vote who, among their fellow students, they would be most likely to turn to for peer help. What a meaningful endorsement from her peers!

Katie will attend a 2 day retreat/training program with the rest of this year's Peer Outreach members, to learn when and how to refer someone to a ...<< MORE >>

Boston Holiday Tree Lighting Videos

Katie put out one of her best performances yet at the Boston Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on the evening of Dec 5, 2008. Check out the videos I have posted on the Past Performances page of the web site. The weather held and there was a great crowd there, Katie met Brian McKnight, award winning rhythm and blues singer,  and Garrett Mason, an amazing guitarist from Nova Scotia, both very nice, and their performances were a treat to see/hear as well. Katie sang What I Did for Love, and White Christmas, accompanied by the fabulous Ray Cavicchio, who invented and ...<< MORE >>

Katie just returned from her first college visit. She and two friends from her High School made a trip to Carnegie Mellon University, where they visited the Musical Theatre Department. They had a great time and got a real taste of college life, and CMU's PA MT department. Thanks so much to Stephanie Burke for taking them down, and for Kaf Wharman at CMU for arranging their visit.

Opening Night

Last night was the opening night of The Miracle Worker, put on by the MV Regional High School drama department. Katie Ann played the role of Helen Keller's mother. The show was just wonderful. There was a very elaborate set, with period furniture and decor, which provided for scenes in different rooms of the Keller home, the yard, and in their garden house where Annie Sullivan worked with Helen in seclusion from the family. Lighting served to put the focus on these different locations, with only minor changes in the set made between scenes with the curtain up. The period ...<< MORE >>

Veteran's Day

This morning, Katie joined the Veteran's Day parade when they arrived in Ocean Park, Oak Bluffs, and kicked off the ceremonies by singing The National Anthem a capella. After a prayer, she then sang God Bless America. Videos are now posted on the Past Performances page of the web site. Katie's 88 year old grandfather, a WWII veteran, was brought over from Windemere nursing home where he resides to hear her performance. 9/11 at The State House

Yesterday 9/10, we traveled to Boston to rehearse at the State House with Katie's Boston area accompanist, Bob Baughman, in the House Chamber at the State House. The Chamber has wonderful acoustic qualities, and in addition  a very good sound system was in place. Katie sounded great. In the end, she was asked to do two songs:  Imagine by John Lennon, and There You'll Be, recorded by Faith Hill and from the Movie Pearl Harbor. Katie already knew her songs, and it was just a matter of working out cues and pacing with the pianist.

The Yard Show at the Tabernacle August 17, 2008

While too sick to perform as planned, Katie attended the show put on by The Yard at the Tabernacle this afternoon. It was a potpouri of young to old, amateur to professional, modern dance to opera - informal and delightful. Island born Abigail Southard wowed us with her operatic soprano voice, and it was wonderful to see and hear the incomparable Marni Nixon, who Katie had rehearsed a duet with. The young Yard dancers were fresh and original an full of joy. The professional opera singers from New York were just incredible.

Unable to perform at The Tabernacle

I guess it had to happen sooner or later!  Katie developed a very nasty sore throat last night, and is unlikely to be able to perform at The Yard's show at The Tabernacle tomorrow, Sunday, Aug 17 at 3 pm. Disappointing all around. We are  hoping that she at least feels up to attending and watching the other great performers in this show. Perhaps we'll see some of you in the audience. Katie has one more scheduled performance - on 9/11 at the State House in Boston - and then she is ready for a much deserved break.

Songwriter debut!

Katie has been composing her own songs for a year or two now, accompanying herself on piano. but has been unwilling to perform them in public. In my humble opinion, they are VERY good, and I have been encouraging her to find a venue to put them out there.

Yesterday was one of Katie's Children's Theatre shows. To my complete surprise, the show began with a performance by Katie and her best friend Tessa.
